Gentle Whidbey
is blessed with weather influenced by the
"warm" waters of Puget Sound, providing
cool, but seldom very cold temperatures
and more modest precipitation than other
areas of Puget Sound, or the East Coast of
the U. S. Lower "rainfall" is experienced
because of the "rain shadow" effect of the
Olympic mountains south and west of
Whidbey.Prevailing southerly winds force
wet air up against the Olympic Mountain
chain creating rain forests there with
precipitation over 200 inches per
year.

In
consequence, Whidbey is "protected" from
moist clouds, so the island receives
considerably less precipitation than other
areas of Western Washington. Seattle
averages about 38-40 inches per year and
Snohomish County (our near mainland)
averages about 36 inches.
